Living With a Huawei Honor 6X

With a listing price of $250, I wasn't expecting my feel with the Huawei Accolade 6X smartphone to be as practiced as the experience one would have with one of the flagship Android phones like the Google Pixel XL, Samsung Galaxy S7, or Huawei's own Mate 9—and information technology isn't. But it comes surprisingly close, specially given the huge difference in cost.

At first glance, the Honor 6X looks a lot similar a premium phone with a metal example, fingerprint reader/domicile button on the back, and a dual rear-facing photographic camera setup. It's not quite as sleek as the flagship phones—or the $400 Honor 8—but it certainly looks like a pace up from the plastic backs I ofttimes await of phones in this cost range.

At 5.9 past iii.0 past 0.3 inches and weighing five.7 ounces, it'southward equally like shooting fish in a barrel to comport as the top-end phones and lighter than the Pixel 40 and the Mate 9 (though that phone has a larger brandish).

The brandish on the 6X is a v.5-inch 1920-by-1080 LCD, which looks very good. It's not as high resolution as the Pixel XL or Milky way S7 edge, which take 2560-by-1400 pixel displays, but the display on the 6X is very vivid and the colors on the screen look adept, if not equally highly saturated equally what you lot'd encounter on the AMOLED displays of the Google and Samsung phones. The brandish looks particularly good in brilliant sunlight.

The telephone is powered by a 16nm Kirin 655 processor, designed by Huawei'southward Hi-Silicon affiliate, which the company says uses lxx pct less power than the 28nm processor in the previous generation. This is a mid-range octacore processor, with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores running at 2.1 GHz plus four A53s running at 1.7GHz in a large.LITTLE architecture along with Mali T830 MP2 graphics and an internal i5 coprocessor designed to coordinate the cores. Though it won't lucifer up with the newest processors using A72 or A73 cores for peak performance, in general, I found performance to be quite good. It was quite snappy and very responsive when loading spider web pages, email, and in running the interface itself, though not equally fast at loftier-end games. I did get very good battery life and was commonly able to go two days on a charge, then I was quite happy with that.

The 6X did a practiced job of property a point in testing on AT&T in New York, California, and New England.

One thing about the 6X that stands out is the camera organization. As I mentioned, it has two rear-facing cameras. The primary camera is a 12MP display with a broad discontinuity lens, while a second 2MP sensor delivers the kind of images in which the subject looks clear only the background is a bit out of focus, an effect known equally bokeh. Huawei stresses that the phone uses a Sony IMX386 Exmor RS sensor, which gives it faster focusing and larger pixels (1.25 square microns) than the typical smartphone. In addition, the Honor 6X includes an 8MP forepart-facing photographic camera with a wide-angle lens, designed for taking selfies.

In general use, I found the camera to be pretty fast and pretty proficient in nigh situations, if not quite up to the all-time of the college-end phones. See, for example, the photo of Grand Central Terminal above—it's nice, but not quite as sharp as what I was able to get with some other cameras. Nonetheless, for a typical mural, portrait, or selfie, the Honor 6X takes pictures you'd be quite happy to view, impress, or mail service on social media.

The dual camera really comes into play when taking portraits. You get to this feature by choosing the wide-aperture selection from the photo carte du jour; after the photo is taken, y'all can and then adjust the focus point. The feature isn't perfect—I've however to see a smartphone that tin can really do this also equally a professional DSLR with a bully lens—but information technology'southward far better than I've noticed with other cameras in this price range. I was pretty impressed.

I found depression-light photography to exist okay, if a chip noisy. The "night shot" mode can improve on this significantly, but I constitute that it really merely works if you're using a tripod or stand up, since the fashion requires the telephone be held steady for xx seconds or and so. The photographic camera also has an interesting time-lapse option and a "light-painting" mode for things like capturing the trails of lite from moving cars. Overall, what really impressed me was that this is a phone that costs less than half that of the top-end phones and yet looks and behaves similarly. It doesn't have the cool expect of an iPhone or the fancy colored back of the Accolade eight or the Galaxy S7, but the 6X does the job with fashion, and with bonus features—notably the dual camera—to spare.
